Schedule & Judge Application

I just added the Schedule of Categories to the web page.

Plus I added a Judge's Application to the site. Many of our long
standing Judges will not be able to attend, since we moved to Vegas.
Totally understandable, but it leaves us with a Judge shortage. We
have already had two highly qualified judges join us. We will still be
inviting our Judges, but the applications will tell us who is
interested.

Yes, as promised, the print out entry form is up on the web site. If you want to secure your position now, just print it out and mail it to me with payment. We will not hold a spot for you without full payment.

I'm working on getting the on-line entry form. To do all the set up for PayPal will take me a bit. I'm also working on getting a PO Box for Wiggles and setting up a PayPal account.

I have been working on the web site a lot the last few days. I now have the Contest Requirements, Sponsor page, Links, and one photo album up. Things are clicking right along.

Tribal Fusion dancers --- help!

Okay, I'm working on the NEW categories for 2009 and I have come up with "Tribal Fusion Solo" and "Tribal Fusion Ensemble". Kinda boring titles, but I didn't want anyone to be guessing what they were.

Does Tribal Fusion cover enough ground for Fusion dancers? I was originally going to make it just Fusion, but that seemed to lack direction. Comments ... ideas .... talk to me.

A slight change in the Tribal Fusion Soloist category

It was pointed out to me that I had said no pop music in this category, but had not said that in the Tribal Fusion Ensemble category. So I took it out today. I guess it was an old holdover in my mind, from the days when we sold videos of the whole contest.

We will start taking registrations in July, as is our tradition. Two
Old Bags have always given you plenty of time to make your plans. As
always, dance positions are chosen by you on a first come, first served
basis.

Past Contest VHSs for sale

The VHS Masters of the first few years of Wiggles of the West will be selling at my ebay store http://stores.ebay.com/Designs-by-Janie These are the tapes we made the 'for sale' tapes from, back when we sold tapes of the whole show. We no longer do that -- don't ask. I am transfering the archive to DVD, as I have time. The Wiggles of the West bank account is a little low after all the refunds for 2008, so this is a way of adding some working capital. So you will be getting a unique collectable and helping us out too. The first one has been listed. They will not be listed in any particular order.

Two Old Bags will only be selling the Masters of the videos they used to sell. You will be buying the VHS as a unique collectable -- you are not buying the copyright to reproduce them. Only Two Old Bags can sell Wiggles of the West videos.

Big Changes for Entertainer category

Okay, I think they are big changes at least. <giggle>

First off, bigger prizes. The Entertainer of the Year for 2009 will receive $500, a Tiara, a Trophy, a dance spot in the Intensive show that night- "A Night in the City of Riches", and a workshop and show performance in the Intensive line-up for 2010. Not bad so far, huh?

As much due to time constrants as anything, the new time limits are 5 minutes for Pre-liminary round and 7 minutes for the Finals. We will now be taking 25 entries, instead of the old 20 from years past.

Judges, Judges, Judges

We will be having some new judges join us for 2009. Simply put some of our long time judges will no longer be with us. The drive from Oregon and Washington is just too far for them -- totally understandable. You see they made the drive to Reno work, because they are also venders, but add another 8-9 hours and it is just too much. I'm the same way going the opposite direction. It is too far for me to drive from Vegas to Oregon.

So I will be putting up a Judges application on the new & improved web site, as soon as the site is ready.

I already have 2 possibly 3 fabulous dancers who have volunteered to Judge!!

I am incredibly excited to announce that in September 2009, Wiggles of the West (formerly of Reno, NV) and the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive will be uniting forces to create an incredibly diverse and comprehensive event experience! Although the two events will remain separate entities, we are working together to merge the activities into 5 solid days of incredible workshops, contests, shows, and shopping—all in the fabulous city of Las Vegas, NV.

The Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive has organized multiple tracks of level and style specific workshops in Vegas for the last 6 years. Wiggles of the West brings 12 years of belly dance competition experience to the table. It is our belief that by joining these two reputable events together, we will create a diverse and world-class experience for belly dancers in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Yes we will. I'm flying out on Wednesday to meet up with Chris so we can drive down to Rakkasah. We will be getting into the official hotel on Thursday. We are working with (and Designs by Janie is selling with) Scheherezade Imports in the first building down by the stage. So stop by and say Hi. We will be able to tell you more about the Vegas move.

Wiggles has a new home ...

With all the depressing news about Wiggles over the last 2 weeks, I thought you might want to hear some good news.

It looks like we have a NEW, Shiney, Sparkly home for 2009. I can't make an official announcement until we have hammered out all the details, but I can say it is very exciting!

No we are not selling the contest, but it is moving. No more Boomtown. And that is all I'm saying on that right now.

We are contacting all the venders and workshop teachers right now. And we will be refunding the entry fees of the contestants so far.

I promise to tell you more just as soon as I can.

Wiggles of the West Contest canceled

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I have to announce that The 13th Annual Wiggles of the West Belly Dance Contest has been canceled for this year.

We lost our space at Boomtown and none of the others are able to help us out. The ones we could fit into were booked for that time and others were too overly priced or the terms weren't appropriate for our event. Some just weren't big enough and we really don't want to downsize the event.

We will be back in 2009, please check the website, tribe and the yahoo groups periodically for more information.

Do not make room reservations at Boomtown

Okay, we just heard this today. Boomtown has canceled all their conventions -- they are remodeling. Yes, that means they canceled our reserved room. Thank the Goddess we hadn't paid the down payment yet.

Chris is searching like a crazed woman for a place big enough for us today. Send her all kinds of good thoughts and any suggestions for places to hold Wiggles. A lot of the hotels in Reno, only do a 3 month out reservation, that simply won't work for us. So keep your fingers crossed.

I'm stuck here in Vegas on pins and needles. I wish I could be there to help Chris find a place.

Let me tell you the story of finding a home for Wiggles in Reno ...

Long time ago in a land far far away ... oops wrong story.
Thirteen years ago the Two Old Bags decided to have a contest. We did our research and put together a solid professional contest, with just enough of our crazy selves thrown in to be ours. I had been working with the Sparks Parks and Rec Dept. as the Workshop Chairman for the local Guild, so it was only natural to put out contest there. The biggest room they had was 6,000 sq. ft., but it had a built in raised stage. We spent the first 2 years there happily growing. We knew we would eventually outgrow it, but we had time. WRONG! The Major of Sparks decided to have a week long city wide sports event and ordered the cancelation of everyone's reservations including us -- 5 months out.

Chris found us the Reno Sparks Convention Center, they were fabulous. Not a luxury location using some of the smaller rooms, but we no longer had to take down all the tables & chairs, sweep the floors, clean the bathrooms, and put out the garbage in order to get our cleaning deposit back. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. Shukryia of Rakkasah was even jealous when she came up to vend, because of all the things they gave us, that the Richmond Center did not give her. We were happy there and did a lot of growing there. We took more space each year and even expanded to 3 days. Then the City decided it was time to remodel and instead of doing it in stages, they closed the place. Orphaned agan.

We went to the Cal Neva Casino, who had just purchased 2 closed casinos in downtown Reno. We met Paula and Linda, who would become friends and co-conspiritors. They had a fabulous room, the old casino floor of one of the properties -- really cool. We signed up. They had a fire 6 months out from our event and returned our deposit. Bill got on the net and then on the phone and soon had a book on all the convention space in Reno & Sparks. Chris and I started calling. We found our friend Paula at the Flamingo Hilton (she couldn't call us, because of contract things). The Flamingo had enough room if we used a second room for some of the venders -- right around 10,000 sq ft. and they through in the stage and dance floor. That was a great year and we signed up for the following year.

6 months out (are you seeing a pattern here) Hilton Corporation sold the Flamingo out from under us. They did move our contract over to the Reno Hilton, actually I think Paula shoved it down their throat, because they never were really nice to us. We had 25,000 sq. ft. (way too much) and lots of nightmares, but we made it work for that year, because we didn't have a choice.

Fortunately, about this time Bill went to work for Boomtown and when they were showing the new hires around he spotted convention space that looked large enough. He called me and I went up to check it out, but they were booked for that year so we had to stay at the Hilton. But as soon as we could we reserved for the following year. They had 8,000 sq. ft. and 2 small rooms to use for venders (we eventually pared down to just use the 8,000 sq. ft). Both Linda and Paula eventually came to work there too and we had the fabulous Larry in catering too. We were very happy.

Now we lost Boomtown --- 5 months out --- and we are trying hard to find a place to hold Wiggles this year.
It is a wonder I have hair left.
I think it is a sign ... I really do.

Jazz up your Wiggle Pants!

I opened the outside seam to give them more flair, shortened them by an inch, and then put silver sequin trim down the side seam. Pictures in the Tribe Album.

Yes, I am working on Wiggles of the West, even though I seem to be behind on everything. I just heard back from Rachel, Entertainer of the Year 2007, and she is all for it. She will be teaching the Friday afternoon workshop!!

So we have: Sirens In Sanity and Jim Boz on Thursday, Rachel on Friday afternoon, and I will be teaching Saturday morning.

Now to get the forms set up.

Yes, that is Jim Boz, who will be teaching a workshop for Wiggles of
the West Bonus Day in 2008, with the Daughters of the Desert - Zoraya
and Zina bint Badia. I'm not sure who took the pictures, but I know it
was taken at a Bozified weekend of workshops put on by Naj (Pat Ford)
in Pheonix, Arizona. The girls asked and of course our Boz said yes.

Possible Bonus Day changes

I'm playing with the scheduling for the 2008 workshops and I was wondering if you would rather have 2 three hour workshops on the Bonus day and pay a little more, instead of 3 two hour workshops. The scheduled teachers for the Bonus Day are Sirens in Sanity and Jim Boz. Please give me your opinions.

West Coast Rakkasah has no dates yet, because it has no home yet. The Richmond place is being refitted, so it is not available. Shukriya is trying very hard to find a home for the March event.

I'm not on staff or anything, but I did just spend the weekend with Aneena and Saqra at Yaa Hala, Y'all. We had a blast!

Now that the more hectic part of moving is over, let me take the time to thank our volunteers. Alyssa, Devi's daughter and her friend Rachel did a fabulous job of picking up scores and clearing the stage of veils and props. This may not sound like much, but it really keeps things running smoothly. Thanks ladies!

Shadia, Jean, Kristen, and Meerah for helping Chris man the door and registration. Huge help!!

Kathie for doing our video again. Huge help and and really big for me, because after Chris is done making videos/DVDs for people, I will actually get to watch the contest. LOL

Minya, Saahira, Jean, Susan, and Amber for being our scorekeepers. Huge help!

Craig, of course, for allowing himself to be drafted into doing the music for us. Thanks from me, because I'm sure Chris has already thanked him. LOL

Of course all our wonderful Judges, you guys are GREAT!!!!!!

And last, but certainly NOT least, Lori Floto, our wonderful MC. She is great! And she has stuck with us for all twelve years.

Speaking of 12 years of sticking with us. Mezdulene and Gaylene has been our longest running Judges and venders, with Halima hot on their heels. And Jean has been helping us with the front desk and scorekeeping all this time too. WOW are we lucky!!

We would not be able to put on this wonderful event without the help of our volunteers. Of course, we also Thank all of you who continue to support us with your entries and your attendance. Every dancer needs people to dance for!!

Bonus Day was a masive success!

Three great workshops: First was "Beading for Belly Dance" taught by me Janie Midgley where the ladies learned all kinds of beading stitches and tricks. Then there was "Evolution" taught by Master teacher and Coach Halima. It was fabulous! She taught the old steps and veil wraps and then how to dance out of the veil wraps. I even learned a step I never know! The last workshop of the day was Mezdulene teaching "Learn to Fly" A fabulous workshop that not only covered single & double veil, but capes and Wings!!!!

Then at night was the Hafla. Live music performed by Solace! And lots of dancing. We also had a full buffet dinner of scruptious food. 75 people attended!!! This thing is growing all the time.

Well I'm off to vender set up. Oreet's workshop. And the first day of the contest!

Finals for Entertainer

Just a quick question....this will be my very first Wiggles EVAH, and I'm wondering: for those of you that have attended/competed in past Wiggles, is it pretty common to have a totally different second show for the Entertainer Finals than performed in Entertainer Prelims? I think I saw somewhere on the website that it has become customary, though not required, to have a different costume in the finals than they wore in prelims, but I can't remember if it said anything regarding a different routine. What have most people done in the past with regards to their routine in the finals?

Stage Background Draping

I just wanted to let the performers know the the stage background (draping) will be white this year. It might be helpful when planning your costume choices. Also, we will not have our stage lights this year. We need to replace the transformers. So it will be house lights. The good news about this is that there will be no dark spots on the stage.

Room and/or ride share?

Hey everyone! Before I book a room for this (and I'd like to do that ASAP! I JUST decided to enter the Wiggles contest) I wanted to ask if anyone wanted to share a room with me. I might come up early saturday and stay until sunday. I come from a clean, non-smoking and pet-free home, and I'm even housetrained! I've also got a few members of the bay area bellydance community that can vouch that I'm not crazy, if you need references :-) So if anyone wants to share a room for one or two nights or has room in their already-booked room for me, let me know!

Also, if anyone is thinking about riding up around the times/days I mentioned above, I'm totally down for that.

Help for a sister in dance

I am writing to let you know about a sister dancer that is in need right now. Sue Crolley aka Kyra lost her only child, 16 year old Joshua in a car accident.

This is has been a tough year for Kyra. A little over a year ago she was diagnosed with

Menière's Disease
Menière's disease is caused by an imbalance in the fluid in the sacs in the inner ear. When the sacs of the endolymphatic system of the inner balloon within the inner ear, a sudden hearing loss, vertigo, ringing (tinnitus), and/or pressure in the ear occur. This disease is episodic (by definition) and erratic in its progression. If left to its natural course, it may progress to total deafness in the affected ear. At that point, the episodes of vertigo and the tinnitus may spontaneously subside.

In addition to the above, Kyra had to have several surgeries for other problems. She lost the use of some of her limbs and had to go through therapy to try to gain control over them. About a month ago the doctors discovered that she has a fracture in her spine and in her hip and will require more surgery.

Because of all of this, she lost her job which greatly hurt the family financially. Then two weeks ago, the tragic accident that took the life of her only child. Joshua was a special child. The doctors told Kyra that she would never have a child and after fifteen miscarriages, a miracle happened and Joshua was born.

Right now both Kyra and her husband John are in an emotional and financial crisis and needs our support.

There are several things that you can do to help. If you wish to make a monetary donation, you can donate money to any Skagit Bank in Washington State to the Joshua Crolley fund.

If you cannot make a monetary donation, then an email to Kyra expressing support and love would go a long way for her emotionally and you can email her at silverorglass@aol.com

Melody, The Emerald Rain Gang and I are working on a fund raiser for the family which we hope will happen in August. We are trying to find a place to hold a hafla fund raiser in Snohomish County so that family and friends of Joshua can attend also.

Anyone want to buy a house?

Yes, our house is on the market now!!! It is in a lovely area called Lemon Valley, where it is peaceful and safe (we don't even lock our car doors). Just 15 minutes from Downtown Reno. It is 1800 sq. ft. with large rooms. New tile floor in the Kitchen and Laundryroom/pantry. New pergo floor in the Hallway (Pergo is great for kids, because you can't hurt it). New paint through out most of the house. On an acre zoned for horses.

It needs NEW owners, so I can move to VEGAS!!!

I've updated my listing(yep, getting down to the biz part of the plug) for velvet covered bra and belt costuming pieces. I added a deep blu velvet covered belt base to my pile of ready to purchase pre-covered bra/belt bases.

I'll be adding to my sewing adventures with pre-covered arm and ankle bands for that finished look.

Well it is a real good chance that it will be closed before we get to Rakkasah. Why do I use this reference? Well in the early days we used to have a lot of people hand in their entries to us at Rakkasah. That was before the net got so big and way before you could enter on line.

We got 3 Entertainer entries yesterday and 1 Rising Star. So that puts Entertainer at 17 out of a possible 20. So if you are thinking about it ...... now is the time to act!

Wiggle's Pants in Action

Yesturday was the Mystical Oasis Bellydance Festival..It was a great time. Losts of dancers [some seasoned pros and lots of first timers] It was great to see you girls, just starting lessons - get out there and dance !.. I hope Mez posts photos on her site.

Well Susan and I talked about this last night at the Mystical Oasis Festival [which was very fun]..
Anyway here is an idea for helping in a small financial way.

A "VIRTUAL CONTEST"
I will design an entry form and post on tribes.. You print out the entry and fill in the information. Your dancer name...what you are dancing to... your costume...and a picture of you in it ! [the Kuchlin and family/friends can make a scrap book of them] and then also anything unique or totally awesome about you dance...I myself think it is time for the Turkish Drop - and I have a feeling it is going to be perfect ! Then mail it the address that will be on the entry form along with you entry fee. Now the fee is your choice on amount. Those of us who have done contest know it is usually $20 to $40 to enter but novice..like a hafla entry $5 is great too. [really what ever you can contribute I am sure is more than appreciated]
I think that as far as choosing "Winners" I have a feeling it will be a hard decision and probably a TIE... maybe we will need a dance off at a later date ?!?!?

I GOT THEM

Yesterday when I got home, I found an oh so special package. I ripped the thing open and out popped an incredible pair of pants. They screamed "put me on". So of course, I stripped down at the kitchen table and slipped them on. MY GAWD - they even make my butt look good. I have really short legs though, so I am gonna have to hem them but I think Wiggles of the West is the best!!!

They just arrived!
I'll give you more information later, because the plumber just got here to install the NEW dishwasher ... great timing huh

I can tell you this much right now, I can get into an XL. I will probably go for a 2X for just a little more comfort --- remember I'm an Old Bag. But I wouldn't if I was younger or had a tighter butt!! LOL They are long, so no worries for the tall people. Give me a few days and I will have ideas for shortening them for the non tall people.

Well I better go keep an eye on the plumber.

OMG!! Is Eric the designer at AZHotshots an awesom artist or what?! THAT's my butt!! I don't think in all my days has my tiny asian butt looked so good!! THANKS to the GODS above for photoshop and Eric!

Janie! Those pants are soooo comfy. 'Course they are Bella pants. Jim made my butt WIGGLE all weekend so by the time I wore my Wiggle butt pants on Sunday I was ready for the Wiggle on the butt of my pants!!!!

I finally have a butt!!! How can one's butt not look good when it's sporting a WIGGLES on it? I have a butt and it wiggles and looks good. Janie, you order an awesom pair of yoga pants Lady!!!

Wiggles of the West pants are coming!!!

We have been discussing this in Zina's thread, but I figured it needed to come out in the open so all the members of the Tribe knew what was going on. The printer is working on them right now!! They will say "WIGGLES of the West" across the butt! Cute idea huh! We have been working out the particulars for about a week now. Actually longer, because Zina has been bugging me to do something since November and with Devi's great suggestion we hit on this.

They will be Navy with White lettering. We have ordered 100 = 20 in each of five sizes S, M, L, XL, & 2XL. You can preorder them now and I will ship them out as soon as I get them. The preorder price is $40 plus $6 shipping (this includes insurance, cause these are valuable). We will be taking them to Rakkasah West (unless they are all gone). They will be with us at the Scheherezade Imports booth in the main room.

Check the web site for details in the very near future (like as soon as I get a picture). Or you can email me privately to pre-order. I'm handling the sale of these, because I have credit processing through Designs by Janie.

"Meet & Greet" Hafla food

It will cost a little more this year for Hafla tickets, because we are going to have a Buffet Dinner. No running for the hot food or hiding crab legs this year. The price is $20.00 for ticket purchased a head of time on line. $25.00 at the door. I chose a menu that was a reasonable price as well as had enough non-meat items for the vegetarians.

So here is the menu:Corn muffins & butter
Potato Salad & Cole Slaw
Tossed Green Salad with 2 Dressings
Baked Beans & Corn on the cob
BBQ Ribs, BBQ Beef Brisket, BBQ Chicken in an Apricot BBQ Glaze
Apple Cobler

We will also have a "No Host" bar again, which means you buy your own drinks. The catering department always serves better brands than the regular casino bars .
